Colombo Dockyard PLC appointed Mr. Thimira S. Godakumbura as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of the company to take over from Mr. D.V Abeysinghe who stepped down as MD/CEO after 7-year tenure.
The announcement was made at the 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM) that took place today 19th April 2023 at the Galadari Hotel Colombo.
Before being appointed as the MD/CEO, Mr.Godakumbura was the Chief Operating officer (COO) of the company. He brings more than 22 years of experience in different capacities starting as a trainee engineer in the year 2000. He has served as the Assistant Production Manager (Hull Construction), Special Projects Manager, Assistant General Manager (New Construction, General Manager (Design & New Construction) and General Manager (Production). He has many local and overseas training experiences and extensive exposure to Ship Repair, Ship Building and Quality Control at Dry Docks World, Dubai and Onomichi Dockyard in Japan.
Mr. Godakumbura is a Mechanical Engineering graduate who passed out in 1999 from the University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka. He holds an MBA from the Post Graduate Institute of Management (PIM), University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). He was the Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee and the council member of IESL for the year 2021/22. In addition to that he is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) in UK and a member of the Indian Technical Committee of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK). In addition, Mr. Godakumbura will hold the position as the Chairman of Dockyard General Engineering Services (Pvt) Ltd., and will also continue as a Director of Dockyard Total Solutions (Pvt) Ltd.
Making a special address at the AGM, Mr Godakumbura paid tribute to the extensive support from the parent company Onomichi Dockyard and the leadership and guidance of the current Chairman Mr. Hideaki Tanaka.
With his industry exposure and pragmatic leadership style Colombo Dockyard is in steady hands to face the upcoming challenges in the global markets and to guide the company ensuring delivery excellence and growth meeting the expectations of the shareholders, employees, and the maritime industry.
Outgoing MD/CEO Mr. D.V Abeysinghe will continue to serve the company as an executive nominee director on the board.
