COLOMBO DOCKYARD LAUNCHES THE CABLE LAYING AND REPAIR VESSEL “C/S SOPHIE GERMAIN” BUILT FOR ORANGE MARINE, FRANCE

Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC), the leader of Shipbuilding Industry in Sri Lanka and one of the most competitive Shipyards in South Asia, successfully launched a Cable Laying and Repair Vessel (C/S Sophie Germain) to Orange Marine France on 3rd November 2022 staying on course with its shipbuilding activities, resilient and undeterred by the challenges faced.

The ceremonial launching took place at the Dock No 2 of CDPLC premises and the occasion was graced by the participation of owners, dignitaries from Embassy of France in Sri Lanka, Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, officials from government institutions including SLN, EDB, SLPA, Customs, Officials from state and private banks, ship designers, Class surveyors, CDPLC top management and employees.

Orange Marine is a French company specializing in the field of submarine telecommunications, from the initial design, engineering, to installation of intercontinental and regional links, and maintenance of existing cables. The Orange Marine’s fleet is one of the most experienced in the world and represents 15% of the world fleet.

Mr. Didier Dillard CEO of Orange Marine cut the rope to mark the ship launching with the presence of Mr. Jean-Luc Vuillemin Executive Vice President International Networks, Mr. Emmanuel Decugis Ship Newbuilding Project Director and the superintendents of Orange Marine.

Mr. Katsuki Kotaro, Deputy Head of Mission of Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka and Mr. Aurélien Maillet Chargé d’affaires, a.i, Mr. Jean Alexander Egea – Head of the Economic Department, Economic Advisor, Mr.David Erdreich- Deputy Head of the Economic Department from Embassy of France in Sri Lanka represented the foreign missions.

From CDPLC Mr. Hideaki Tanaka Chairman, Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe MD/CEO, Mr. Nozaki Technical Advisor/ Alternate Director, Mr. Horibe Director, Mr. Thimira Godakumbura Chief Operating Officer and a host of other Senior Management and Staff representing CDPLC participated at this occasion.

Chief of Staff Rear Admiral UVMP Perera and Commander Western Naval Area Rear Admiral HGUD Kumara were also among the invitees representing Sri Lanka Navy.

The basic design of this vessel was developed by Vard Design AS of Norway to be a highly eco- friendly vessel and Mr. Geir Rygg Berge Department Manager Project Engineering and Mr. Roy Arne Stavik SVP Sales hos VARD also joined the occasion representing Vard Design. Detailed design was carried out inhouse by the CDPLC design team.

This vessel is built to Bureau Veritas (BV) classification society standards and regulatory requirements of the French Flag Authority. Representing Bureau Veritas, surveyors Mr Prasanna Gunathilaka and Mr Chamila Yapa graced the occasion.

In the year 2019, CDPLC successfully built and delivered a 113m Cable Laying Vessel to Japan and this will be the second Cable Repair and Laying vessel in the segment and the first one from CDPLC to Europe. With the delivery of this vessel early next year, CDPLC would earn the reputation in the international market as a shipyard having delivered 02nos of cable ships within a short span of 5 years.

Addressing the occasion, CDPLC Chairman Mr. Hideaki Tanaka expressed that “Today’s function is a good chance to show Colombo Dockyard’s presence to international market and also good chance to send the message that Colombo Dockyard will never give up under lot of difficulties faced by Sri Lanka and we will continue to be a leader of cable layer vessels in international market”.

This is another project showcasing CDPLC’s reputation in the European Market with the brand “Built in Sri Lanka blending Sri Lankan technology with Japanese quality” receiving high recognition and acceptance in Europe market.

Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) On 21st September 2022 delivered “Misje Vita”, 5000DWT EcoBulk Carrier built for Misje Eco Bulk AS, Norway (Misje).

This is the first vessel of the series where CDPLC signed and executed shipbuilding contracts in March 2020 for four vessels initially.
Norwegian company Misje Eco Bulk AS is CDPLC’s first European customer for a new construction project and the delivery of the vessel marks a historic milestone in Sri Lankan shipbuilding which demonstrate the CDPLC’s ability to undertake different types of vessels with varying and modern technologies. CDPLC is pleased to be able to deliver the ship on schedule despite many disruptions both domestically and internationally.

This is a 89.95m long vessel is designed to hold a cargo capacity of 5000 DWT. The type of cargo it could carry includes bulk cargo, grain, timber, unit loads and containers.

These vessels are designed to be sustainable and climate friendly with lower emissions compared to conventional bulk carriers of the same size incorporating Hybrid-Electric Drive system with Energy Storage Battery System and Energy Management System.

These state-of-the-art bulk carrier concepts are in line with the owner’s vision of providing Norwegian and European industrial customers with the most profitable, predictable, safe, and most environmentally friendly maritime transport services. The design and basic design were developed by Wartsila Ship Design Norway AS. Detailed design was carried out inhouse by the CDPLC design team.

The delivery protocols were signed at the CDPLC Head office by Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe MD/CEO of CDPLC and Mr. Roald Misje, Chairman of the Misje Eco Bulk AS.

SUGAHARA KISEN’S VEHICLE CARRIER M.V. “NORTHERN HIGHWAY” CALLS AT COLOMBO DOCKYARD

188m x 28m Vehicle carrier is a first-time caller to Colombo Dockyard. 13-year-old, Japanese
built, well maintained beauty drydocked recently at Colombo for her intermediate survey.

Colombo Dockyard has been serving the Vehicle carrier fleets from NYK, Wallem, Wilhelmsen over the past few decades. This Japanese Vehicle carrier call reactivated the service options to the growing market segment.

The vessel is owned by Sugahara Kisen Co., Ltd., Japan (Estb 1963) and operated by K Line Ltd. Onomichi Dockyard Co. ltd, Japan, the parent company of Colombo Dockyard recommended the drydocking facility at the center of Indian ocean to the owners. The Company’s line of business includes the transportation of freight on all inland waterways. They are covering huge spectrum in logistics and transportation in Japan having operating Bulk, Vehicle, LPG, Cement, Container Carriers and Refrigerated Cargo Carriers which are operating mostly on regular charters.

She was docked in Dock 04 where the Shipyard carried out general drydocking repairs including wire renewal of rampways compling to DNV requirements. The project team was headed by ship Manager Mr. C.M . Kapurubandara and Senior Invoicing Engineer Mr. W.G.A.R. Sameera under the guidance of the residence Director from Onomichi Dockyard, Mr. Atsushi Horibe where owner’s interest was looked after by Capt. Kenichi Kawakubo and Mr. Toshinari Yamagata from Shipping department of Sugahara Kisen Co. Ltd.

The decision makers found very satisfied on their decision of coming Colombo and the job done at Colombo Dockyard. The project was completed well ahead to the quoted duration which was highly appreciated by the vessel operator K line Ltd. Colombo Dockyard proved the potential of being the preferred repair partner for Japanese fleets in the middle of Indian Ocean for their planned drydocking repairs as well as emergency afloat repairs. Colombo Dockyard has also become the preferred repair destination for the fleet vehicle carriers calling at the Hambantota International Port (HIPG) located just 150NM away from Colombo.

RUSSIA’S FESCO FLEET RETURNS TO COLOMBO DOCKYARD WITH MV FESCO OLGA

2007 built heavy cargo carrier of LOA 138.01 x 21.34 beam called Colombo Dockyard for her third special survey. The vessel is owned and managed by the branch office at Vladivostok of Far East Shipping Company (FESCO) Integrated Transport, Ltd., Russian Federation. FESCO fleet had previously visited Colombo Dockyard’s facilities during the late 1990s and this is the first opportunity for a dock slot to receive their good fleet to Colombo. FESCO is the largest transport and logistics company in private sector of Russia.

In Colombo she was docked in Dock No. 01. Shipyard carried out general drydocking repairs including full blasting, painting of all cargo holds, windlass repair, extensive renewal of CO2 line and numerous miscellaneous repairs. The project team was headed by ship Manager Mr. C.M .Kapurubandara and Senior Invoicing Engineer Mr. W.G.A.R. Sameera where owner’s interest was looked after by Mr. Nikolay Leunov – Head of Division – Operations and Mr. Alexander Trifanov – Superintendent Engineer – Fleet Maintenance. Shipyard complied to all Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) requirements during this call.

The owner representatives, ship officials and ship crew found very satisfied with the job done at Colombo. They witnessed the proactive measures taken by the management of Colombo Dockyard to ensure uninterrupted work on their vessel and despite the adverse external factors which Sri Lanka is currently experiencing. Given the successful completion of project, this opens a strong market for Sri Lanka/ Colombo Dockyard to strengthen the business relationship in the maritime sector in longer term. DIRECTOR GENERAL OF SOUTH ASIA DIVISION OF MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF JAPAN VISITS COLOMBO DOCKYARD

On July 15th, 2022, a team of high-profile missions from Japan visited Colombo Dockyard PLC, the pioneering shipbuilder and the Ship Repairer of Sri Lanka.

The visit was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan with the patronage of the Japanese embassy in Sri Lanka to welcome the Director General of the South Asia Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Japanese ambassador to Sri Lanka, Director South Asia Division, Assistant Director South Asia Division, Japanese Minister (Deputy Ambassador), Second Secretary (Economic Section), and Second Secretary (JP Army Lieutenant) were among the other dignitaries present.

The team was briefed with a company presentation by the Chairman of Colombo Dockyard PLC Mr. Hideaki Tanaka and had a brief yard tour as well covering the ongoing projects sites and the workshops. The tour was concluded with a fruitful discussion on how to overcome the current difficulties faced by the Colombo Dockyard under the challenging economic situation of Sri Lanka.

Colombo Dockyard PLC operates in collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Company Limited of Japan which owns a stake of 51% at Colombo Dockyard PLC.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD REPRESENTS SRI LANKAN SHIP REPAIR AND SHIPBUILDING AT THE NAVALIA 2022 IN VIGO, SPAIN

Sri Lanka’s pioneer Shipbuilding and Ship repairing facility, Colombo Dockyard PLC participated in one of the biggest International Shipping Exhibitions “Navalia 2022” from May 24th -26th in Vigo, Spain.

Colombo Dockyard has been a regular participant at many marine exhibitions, such as Posidonia, Greece, SMM Hamburg and Sea Asia, Singapore and other platforms over the past four decades. This is the first instance Colombo Dockyard has participated in the Navalia exhibition. The shipyard has been flying the Sri Lankan flag and promoting Sri Lanka – Colombo as a competitive repair and building centre in the South Asian region in Europe and on Global platforms. The Navalia exhibition which was initially planned to be held in 2020 was postponed to 2022 due to the Covid pandemic restriction spanning the globe.

The visionary marketing strategies outlined by the Colombo Dockyard senior management team Mr H.Tanaka, Chairman and Mr D V Abeysinghe, Managing Director /CEO were executed creating awareness in the Spanish market of the offerings provided by Colombo Dockyard successfully.

In terms of the number of visitors, the trade fair has met its goal to reach 20,000 visitors during the three days of the event. The visit of HM the King to Navalia has been the final accolade for this biennial event, which is number 1 in Spain and number 3 in Europe in its sector. It was the first time that King Felipe opens an event of these characteristics in Galicia.

This focused international marine exhibition had been targeted to penetrate selected market segments such as the specialised Spanish fishing fleet operating in the Indian Ocean territory.

This event allowed Colombo Dockyard to portray the technical and logistic capabilities available to the Spanish ship owners in one of the most strategic marine locations in the Indian ocean.

The developments in the country were also discussed and required assurances were given to the clients, of a peaceful environment conducive to business, with the Government of Sri Lanka prioritising the Port related industries.

During this focused event, some of the factors highlighted to the potential clients were: Colombo’s strategic location close to the main marine fishing hot spots such as Seychelles and Mauritius. Quality repair services, safe working environment, rapid response afloat repair facility and Japanese collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard, faster turnaround times and competitive rates. The shipbuilding sector highlighted the wide product portfolio on offer for specialised high-end Vessels ie., Cable Laying Vessels, Hybrid Eco-Bulk Carriers, Passenger Vessels, Offshore Support Vessels, Crew Boats and various other Work Boats to meet the demanding requirements of a dynamic market.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD PLC LAUNCHES “MISJE VITA”, 5000DWT ECO BULK CARRIER BEING BUILT FOR MISJE ECO BULK AS

On 23rd May 2022, Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) auspiciously launched “Misje Vita”, 5000DWT EcoBulk Carrier being built for Misje Eco Bulk AS, Norway (Misje).

The launching ceremony is the formal custom that celebrates transferring the vessel to water for the first time. As per the Sri Lankan traditions, this is done by breaking a ‘pot of milk’ over the ship’s bow area inviting good luck to the vessel, the crew and the owners and subsequently filling the dock with water making the vessel float.

The ceremony was graced by Mr. Roald Misje Chairman, Ms. Alina Printseva, Chief Financial Officer from Misje, Mr. Thusitha Herath and Mr. Venura Wanasainghe, Owner Representatives for the project, Mr. Saman Kumarasinghe, Class Surveyor of Class DNV GL. From CDPLC Mr. H. Tanaka Chairman, Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe MD/CEO, Mr. Iku Kuwaoka Technical Advisor/Alternate Director, Mr. Thimira Godakumbura Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Lal Hettiarachchi General Manager (Supply Chain Management), Mr. Gihan Ravinatha General Manager (Finance)/ CFO, Mr. Mangala De Silva General Manager (Group Legal and Compliance), Mr. P.S. This is the first Vessel of a series and these 89.95m long vessels are designed to hold a cargo capacity of 5000 DWT. The type of cargo they could carry includes bulk cargo, grain, timber, unit loads and containers. Each vessel is powered by 4 stroke diesel engines with an Electric Hybrid system supplying additional power through a battery storage system.

Colombo Dockyard builds underwater restaurant structure for Aanugandu Falhu Island Resort, Maldives

Colombo Dockyard PLC has successfully completed the contract for the design, supply of materials, fabrication, towing and providing installation guidance of an Underwater Restaurant Structure (UWRS) for Aanugandu Falhu Island in the Republic of Maldives.

Amidst an extremely difficult period in the country caused by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, CDPLC managed to complete the 440T steel structure within just seven months including the design and successfully dispatched the UWRS to Maldives on 18 February. The UWRS reached Maldives on 22 February. The contract was awarded in April 2021.

CDPLC will guide the client’s team to safely submerge this structure and place on the seabed of Lagoon 17, Aanugandu Island.

The client expects this to be a major tourist attraction for their newly developed resort. Once commissioned and put into operation, this will be the largest underwater restaurant in Maldives with a seating capacity of 48 persons with viewing gallery to all guests simultaneously.

The concept design originated from the client which was converted into an engineering marvel with the design developed by AKDA Engineers Lanka Ltd., headed by A.K. Diyabalanage and Colombo Dockyard design team carried out the detail and production design.

The specifications included length: 32.78m; breath: 18m; restaurant depth: 4.5m below Mean Sea Level and seating capacity: 48.

This is the second such project undertaken by Colombo Dockyard. It handled the first-ever Underwater Restaurant Structure (UWRS) project in 2018 to the Uthuru Maafaru Islands of Maldives. Proven capability of CDPLC has allowed this new client to place its confidence on CDPLC to build another UWRS for its hotel chain ‘Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts’ in Maldives. This underwater restaurant will add yet another feather to the portfolio of luxury resorts with exotic underwater dining experience of Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts.

CDPLC is the pioneering shipbuilding, ship repairing and heavy engineering facility in the country and operates in joint collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Company Ltd. of Japan with Sri Lankan Government institutions having a shareholding of 35%.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD SIGNS TWO MORE SHIPBUILDING CONTRACTS TO BUILD ECO BULK CARRIERS FOR MISJE ECO BULK NORWAY

Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) signed and executed two more shipbuilding contracts with Misje Eco Bulk AS (Misje) a Norwegian company, a fully owned subsidiary of Kåre Misje & Co., to build two more 5000 DWT Eco Bulk Carriers. CDPLC has already executed four Eco Bulk Carrier contracts and these two vessels will be the 5th and 6th vessels of the series.

These 89.95m long vessels are developed as eco-friendly vessels, as they have lower emissions compared to a conventional Bulk Carriers of the same size as each vessel is powered by 4 stroke diesel engine with an Electric Hybrid system supplying additional power through a Battery system. The concept design and the basic design of these modern Bulk Carriers are developed by Wartsila Ship Design Norway AS and the detailed designing is carried out inhouse by the CDPLC design team.

In addition to the six Eco-Bulk Carrier vessels for the Norwegian market, construction of a Cable Laying and Repair Vessel (CRV) for a French owner is already underway at CDPLC, which portrays the good reputation earned by CDPLC in the European Market with the brand “Made in Sri Lanka, blending Sri Lankan technology with Japanese quality” receiving high recognition and acceptance.

CDPLC has been targeting the European market extensively, especially for the construction of Eco friendly Bulkers, Cable Laying and Repairing Vessels, Service Operation Vessels, etc… which are of high demand and CDPLC has been highly successful in capturing and serving these emerging markets in Europe with the new strategic marketing approaches adopted by CDPLC.

Marketing team of Colombo Dockyard (CDPLC) participated as an exhibitor at Europort 2021 held at brand new Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Center, Rotterdam. Joining with ESMA, the agents for CDPLC for Benelux region, CDPLC got the opportunity to meet their regular clients and make couple of new developments of the shipyard for 4 days from 2nd to 5th November 2021.

CDPLC had the opportunity to meet the giants in the industry in Benelux region and potential fleets to introduce the facilities and capabilities available in Colombo Dockyard which strategically located on a world’s busiest marine trade route which connects eastern and western worlds. Colombo Dockyard opened a branch office at port of Trincomalee on the same day the exhibition started so the good message of our new Branch Office at East coast of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee, in addition to port of Hambantota, was announced to all CDPLC’s stakeholders at Europort. CDPLC detailed their strength in afloat repairs with “Rapid Response Afloat Repair facility” at all ports of Sri Lanka which found highly attractive to European shipowners in need of a support in Indian waters.

The exhibition was a participation of 800 maritime companies from 43 countries. Footfall was almost 20,000 high quality visitors from 79 countries. It is the first major event after two years, especially after Covid Pandemic which allowed the clients, suppliers and other stakeholders of the industry to meet face to face which is the most important fact in building relationships. The exhibition was well above the expectation of all the participants and encouraging. During the Europort Covid restrictions were much relaxed for fully vaccinated personals.
