French Ambassador Visits Colombo Dockyard

His Excellency Mr. Eric Lavertu the Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Mr. D.D. Matharaarachchi Secretary to the State Ministry of Warehouse facilities, Container yards, Port supply facilities, and Boats & Shipping Industry Development and Mr. Jean-Alexandre Egea Economic Counsellor of the Embassy of France paid a courtesy visit to Colombo Dockyard PLC recently. The Ambassador undertook this visit as part of the recent contract inked between the Colombo Dockyard and Orange Marine France.

The Ambassador, the Secretary to State Ministry and the Economic Counsellor were received by Mr. Hideaki Tanaka Chairman and Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe MD/CEO and followed up by a cordial discussion including other senior officials of the Colombo Dockyard including Mr. K. Kanaya Director, Mr. S. Asai Technical Advisor/ Alt. Director, Mr. Benny Fernando Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Thimira Godakumbura General Manager (Production) and Mr. Prince Lye Head of Shipbuilding Marketing.

Colombo Dockyard thanked HE the Ambassador, Hon. State Minister Jayantha Samaraweera and the Economic Counsellor for their support extended in view to the finalization of the contractual documents under special approval in November 2020, giving priority to continuation of economic activities without any hindrance by the pandemic. Colombo Dockyard presented plaques of appreciation to HE the Ambassador and Economic Counsellor and to the Secretary to the State Ministry on behalf of the Hon. Minister.

The Ambassador wished Colombo Dockyard, the best of luck in construction of this high technology vessel which is especially designed and equipped for sub-sea cable lay and repair operation duties worldwide and expressed his continued support to further consolidate bilateral business and to explore new avenues for business cooperation between France and Sri Lanka.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD SECURES A CONTRACT TO BUILD A CABLE LAYING AND REPAIR VESSEL FOR ORANGE MARINE FRANCE

Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC), the leader of Shipbuilding Industry in Sri Lanka and one of the most competitive Shipyards in South Asia, secured a contract to build a Cable Laying and Repair Vessel (vessel) to Orange Marine France.

Orange Marine is a French company specializing in the field of submarine telecommunications, from the initial design, engineering, to installation of intercontinental and regional links, and maintenance of existing cables. The Orange Marine’s fleet is one of the most experienced in the world and represents 15% of the world fleet.

The Contract signing was held recently and Mr. Didier Dillard CEO of Orange Marine signed the contract in the presence of Mr. Emmanuel Décugis Head of Fleet and Crew Department and   Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe MD/CEO signed the Contract on behalf of the CDPLC in the presence of Mr. Hideaki Tanaka Chairman, Mr. K. Kanaya Director Mr. S. Asai Alternate Director and the Senior Management team of Colombo Dockyard.

At this historic moment, it is worthy of acknowledging the support and assistance extended by HE the President of Sri Lanka, HE the Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka, Honourable State Minister of Warehouse facilities, Container yards, Port supply facilities, and Boats & Shipping Industry Development, Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry, Sri Lankan Embassy in France, Export Development Board, Board of Investment, enabling a team from Colombo Dockyard to travel to France to negotiate and finalize the contractual documents under special approval, giving priority to continuation of economic activities without hindrance during this pandemic times.

The proposed vessel is a modern, high technology vessel which is specially designed and equipped for sub-sea cable lay and repair operation duties with a high focus on good sea keeping qualities, excellent station keeping performance and low fuel consumption.

The vessel has been designed by Vard Design AS of Norway and an optimized hull form and bow shape developed by Vard has been incorporated in the design, enabling the vessel to achieve high speeds and minimize its carbon footprints, to be a highly eco-friendly vessel.

The vessel’s primary activities shall be to carry out cable operations, including laying, repair and ROV inspection. The vessel is able to mobilize power cable lay spread to perform subsea inter array cable laying. The vessel is 100m in length with a beam of 18.8m and a Depth of 7.15m and shall have a deadweight capacity of 1800 DWT. The vessel can achieve an impressive speed of 14.5 knots and has accommodation facilities for 76 persons. The vessel has three cable tanks to carry fiber optic and power cables. One of the three tanks is fitted with a Carousel. 

The vessel shall be fitted out with a diesel-electric propulsion plant. The power plant shall consist of four generator sets for electrical propulsion power. The vessels propulsion shall be by two main azimuth propellers in the aft and two tunnel thrusters in the forward and the system will be run and monitored by Integrated Automation System and Power Management System.

This vessel shall be built to Bureau Veritas classification society standards and shall meet the regulatory requirements of the French Flag Authority. The Vessel is scheduled to be delivered in the early 2023.

The innovative eco-friendly design, quality of workmanship, the CDPLC’s proven capability and previous experience gave Colombo Dockyard the competitive edge over international competition to secure this project.

In the year 2019, CDPLC successfully built and delivered a 113m Cable Laying Vessel to Japan and with this new contract, CDPLC is carving out a name for itself as a reputed, reliable and trustworthy Shipbuilder for Cable Laying and Repair Vessel in the world.  This is the second successive entry by Colombo Dockyard in to the prestigious European market in the recent times and is well set to establish Colombo as a preferred Shipbuilding destination for European Ship Owners.

Colombo Dockyard Lays Keel Of Pilot/Patrol Boat For Kowa Company Ltd, Japan

On 15th September 2020, Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) laid the keel to auspiciously commence shipbuilding work on the Pilot/ Patrol Boat for Kowa Company Ltd. of Japan (Kowa).

This keel laying ceremony marked the commencement of hull construction work of the Pilot/ Patrol Boat and this momentous occasion was graced by Mr. C.S. Sangameswaran, Mr. A. Alahakoon, Mr. B.N. Jayawardane Class Surveyors of Class IRS and from CDPLC Mr. H. Tanaka Chairman, Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe MD/CEO, Mr. Yusihiro Saki Technical Advisor/Alternate Director, Mr. Lal Hettiarachchi, General Manager (Projects and Engineering), Mr. Thimira Godakumbura General Manager (Design and New Construction) and a host of other Senior Management and Staff representing CDPLC participated at this occasion.

This 19m Pilot/ Patrol boat is a proven design developed by MACDUFF Scotland. This boat will serve to transport pilots from shore to ship and also patrolling duties if necessary. It can accommodate a total number of 12 persons and it can achieve a speed of 20 knots.

In addition to this Pilot/ Patrol boat, CDPLC has already built and delivered two similar Pilot Launches for Sri Lanka Ports Authority in December 2019 and the third Pilot Launch is currently under construction.

This ceremony was organized and conducted in a modest scale and in a simple manner paying special attention of the present situation with COVID-19 outbreak and to the Government’s Health and Safety guidelines placed, depicting CDPLC’s corporate social responsibility towards the prevention of any possible transmission of the COVID-19 at workplaces.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD PLC TO BUILD SIX (6) PLUS FOUR (4) OPTIONAL ECO BULK CARRIERS TO MISJE ECO BULK AS NORWAY

Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) is moving towards to execute an already signed contract with Misje Eco Bulk AS (Misje) a Norwegian company, to build six (6) firm plus four (4) optional Eco Bulk Carriers.

The contracts were signed on 14th March 2020 but is scheduled to come in to effect only in the month of September 2020 with Owners final board approval.

Misje Eco Bulk AS is a fully owned subsidiary of Kåre Misje & Co., a family owned Norwegian company which holds a group of companies which provides a complete package of services from chartering and operation to technical and financial management.

These 89.95m long vessels are designed to hold a cargo capacity of 5000 DWT. The type of cargo they could carry includes bulk cargo, grain, timber, unit loads and containers. Each vessel is powered by 4 stroke diesel engine with an Electric Hybrid system supplying additional power through a Battery system.

These vessels are developed as eco-friendly vessels, as they have lower emissions compared to a conventional Bulk Carriers of the same size. The concept and the basic design of the innovative Bulk Carriers are developed by Wartsila Ship Design Norway AS and the detailed designing will be carried out by CDPLC.

The first vessel of the series is scheduled to be delivered in 18 months and the subsequent vessels will be delivered in 4 months intervals.   

Amidst the negative impacts from last year’s Easter Sunday incident and currently facing COVID-19 pandemic, it showcases the successful marketing efforts carried out by CDPLC in a challenging environment. CDPLC has been targeting the European market extensively, especially for the construction of Eco friendly Bulkers, Cable Laying and Repairing Vessels, Service Operation Vessels, etc… which are in demand and CDPLC is extremely confident of serving these emerging requirements in Europe with the capacity and experience CDPLC has gathered over the past four and half decades of shipbuilding expertise.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD PLC LAUNCHES THE BUOY TENDER VESSEL BEING BUILT FOR GENERAL COMPANY FOR PORTS OF IRAQ THROUGH TOYOTA TSUSHO CORPORATION OF JAPAN

Vessel After Launching

On 22nd July 2020, Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) auspiciously launched it’s Yard Number NC 0244, a 60 m Buoy Tender Vessel being built for General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) as per an Agreement signed with Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) of Japan funded under  Japanese ODA Loans by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The ceremonial launching is the process of floating or transferring the vessel to water for the first time. Symbolically this is done by breaking a ‘pot of milk’ according to Sri Lankan traditions over the ship’s bow area inviting good luck to the vessel, the crew and the owners and subsequently filling the dock with sea water enabling the vessel to float.

The ceremony was graced by Mr. Hayder Khaldoon Mohammedsami Alahmed, Mr. Rayed Kareem Mashhoot Al-Saeedi, Site Engineers from GCPI, Mr. Ali Alakus Site Manager of Project from Nippon Koei Co. Ltd and Mr H.V.K. Sarath Kumara Peiris Deputy General Manager Nippon Koei Co. Ltd Liaison Office. Mr. Hayder Khaldoon Mohammedsami Alahmed of GCPI performed the honour of cutting the rope to break the milk pot and launch the vessel.

Mr. Madhawa Fonseka, Manager-Colombo Office and Mr. Vishal Chowdary, in-charge of project and Mr. Roshan Sanjeewa Colombo Office Surveyor attended this event representing the Classification Society ClassNK.

From CDPLC, Mr. Hideaki Tanaka (Chairman), Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe (MD/CEO), Mr. K. Kanaya (Director), Mr. Y. Saki (Technical Advisor/ Alt Director) and a host of other Senior Management and Staff participated at this momentous occasion.

The Buoy Tender Vessel is designed to be operated to retrieve and launch marine navigation buoys, to provide repair and maintenance to marine navigation buoy, to transport marine navigation buoys and/or spare parts and to transport general cargo. This is a 60m long vessel with a breadth of 12m and a depth of 4.6m. The vessel is driven by twin diesel engines and is capable of achieving a speed of 12 knots. The vessel also shall be equipped with a Crane with a lifting capacity of 22 tons. This vessel also provides fully air conditioned comfortable living quarters for its complement of 28 persons.

In addition to this BTV, CDPLC is constructing another vessel for GCPI which is a 50m Pilot Station Vessel (PSV). The PSV is a twin hull Catamaran type vessel which will be used to transport of pilots and provisions, to provide pilots with accommodation services and to provide station and necessary support for pilot boats.

These projects which are vital to the socio economic development of Iraq will strengthen the relationship with Republic of Iraq, one of Sri Lanka’s close allies for decades and we are confident that with these shipbuilding projects generating from TTC Japan which are funded by JICA, will dawn in a new era in the bilateral economic sphere of the relationship between Sri Lanka and Japan.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES EXTENSIVE STEEL MODIFICATION REPAIRS ON FPSO DHIRUBHAI -1 AT HIPG

FPSO Dhirubhai -1 at HIPG

290m long, 44m beam FPSO of GRT 97,660 is laid up in Hambantota port for her next charter. She is owned by  Aker Contracting FP ASA and managed by AFP Operations AS, Norway and has an oil production capacity of 60,000 barrels. Floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons and the storage of oil.

A moon pool of almost 10m diameter needed to be permanently closed and Colombo Dockyard was called for the job. Shipyard pre-fabricated panels at yard work-shop at Colombo with LR Grade EH-36, shot blasted prime coated plates. Then transported by land to the vessel in Hambantota port, welded in place where is a total tonnage of over 28 tons were renewed.

The project team was coordinated by Mr. P.L.Ramesh Lahiru which repairs were headed by Mr Y.R.A.P.M. Rajapakse. The essential planning support was extended by Mr Avantha Gunatilleka, Senior Engineer Planning. 

The professional support extended by the HIPG/ HIPS teams across all levels from the top down to the operation levels must be mentioned and appreciated, which has resulted in Colombo Dockyard being able to promote Sri Lanka as a serious destination for ship repairs and shipbuilding. 

Capt. Nikolaos Messinis who is the master of the vessel looked after the owner’s interest. The husbanding agents Hayleys Advantis Limited provided the necessary co-ordination support to manage the project smoothly and complete the project on schedule meeting owners and DNV Classification Society’s requirements.

MT. SCF SAYAN, EMERGENCY REPAIRS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED BY COLOMBO DOCKYARD AT HIPG

Length 274.48m and breadth 48.04m with GRT of 81,085.00

The Aframax tanker was experiencing failure on her propulsion system, Managed by SCF Management Services, Cyprus contacted Colombo Dockyard for repair assistance, given the size of the vessel she was directed to Hambantota HIPG port, where the vessel was comfortably accommodated at the repair berth.  

Sovcomflot (SCF) is the largest shipping company in Russia and a world leader in energy shipping. The company is focused on offshore services, liquefied gas transportation and the conventional shipping of crude oil and petroleum products, with 146 vessels with a combined deadweight of 12,648,839 tonnes trading globally.

After arrival intermediate shaft (18 tons) was disconnected and removed for inspections. It was found that the connecting bolt failure between the intermediate shaft fwd flange and flywheel flange. As per the owner’s request Marine Shaft, Denmark deputed machinists and portable machining tools to HIPG.

However, due to prevailed COVID 19 situation mid-March 2020, Denmark machinist team was recalled to Denmark given the global pandemic situation, the project scope was not completed. Upon the request from the owner’s, yard continued the in-situ machining process keeping generally agreed on safety precautions against COVID 19 which vessel gained days to complete the job.

With the need for final precision machining by “Marine Shaft” to qualify for their original equipment warranty, owners were looking for all available options to complete the project early as possible. The flight restrictions on account of the COVID regulations were overcome, when the owners decided to charter a flight and get down the Denmark machinists on board to complete the job. Shipyard team assembled the propulsion line and completed the job, meeting the owner’s expectations. In addition to this main job, coolers and valve servicing were done.

Mr W.N.R. Janith Chamika headed the repair team while Mr. I.K.L.C Weerasinghe coordinated the job. Owner’s interest was looked after by Mr Aleksandr  Akulov and Mr Georgy Pavliashvili. The DNV-GL ensured the classification requirements were fulfilled meeting the owner’s expectations.  The local husbanding agents for the project ACRUS SHIPPING handled the co-ordination work smoothly.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD SHIP REPAIR AND BUILDING OPERATIONS RETURN TO NEW-NORMAL LEVELS

Global pandemic conditions bring out the best in shipyards innovative strategies to counter difficult times. Since its establishment in 1974 marking its 46th Anniversary in 2020, Colombo Dockyard has witnessed recessions, boom times and natural disasters amongst which this COVID 19 pandemic driven lockdown situation is unique and unprecedented, which requires innovative and smart approaches to counter these challenges successfully.

Sri Lankan government’s aggressive drive to combat the COVID 19 pandemic from mid-march has been effective, paving the way for relaxing the lockdown on 11th May 2020. The Government of Sri Lanka appointed COVID 19 Taskforce had declared all Port related activities as essential services, thus giving the shipyard to continue its operations under its guidelines. Over the lockdown period, the shipyard has been operating at 20~30% capacity providing essential repair services, completing the vessels undergoing repairs in the yard, meeting the client’s requirements safely.

In Colombo Dockyard, we focus on organising the work of our shipyard team and subcontractors in such a way that it is carried out in the safest possible way, in keeping in line with the Government COVID 19 Taskforce guidelines.

The shipyard operations have stepped up to planned New-Normal operational levels, under the in~house campaign titled “ Revival” under the visionary leadership of Mr Hideki Tanaka, Chairman, Mr D V Abeysinghe, Managing Director and Mr Benny Fernando, Chief Operating Officer.  We are pleased to place on record that, we have started repairs on two bulk carriers successfully (17th of May), managing to clear the mandatory health clearances smoothly, with no berthing delays (waiting for quarantine etc) on the arrival schedule of the vessels. The vessels were berthed on arrival. This has been possible on account of the professional guidance given the Port Health Officials and the Harbour Master.

In solidarity of the efforts, Colombo Dockyard actively contributed Five Million Rupees to the national COVID task force fund.

The Shipyard operates jointly in Collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Co. These Pilot Launches are designed to hold a high degree of stability and comfort in all weather conditions and these Pilot Launches will provide a stable platform during embarking and disembarking Pilots. These Pilot Launches are equipped with state of the art machinery and equipment developed for this type of launches world-wide, which are of proven type with high dependability, durability and suitability for the intended purpose.

COLOMBO DOCKYARD PLC SUCCESSFULLY ENTERS INTO A CONTRACT WITH KOWA COMPANY LTD OF JAPAN TO SUPPLY A PILOT BOAT

Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) has successfully entered into a contract with Kowa Company Ltd (KOWA) of Japan to supply a pilot boat.

The contract was signed on 16th of December 2019 at CDPLC Head Office.

Exchanging contracts.

This 19m pilot boat is a proven design developed by MACDUFF Scotland. This boat will serve to transport pilots from shore to ship. It can accommodate a total number of 12 persons and it can achieve a speed of 20 knots.
